Which Instruction of Srila Prabhupada Do You Follow Most Closely?

Srila Prabhupada gave thousands of instructions during his lifetime – through his books, letters, lectures and personal conversations. Each of them is like a lamp illuminating the path back to godliness.

“Always chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra and never forget Krishna.”

At first glance, this may seem simple. But in practice, it is profound, all-encompassing and life-transforming. Chanting is not just a ritual or recommendation – it is the core of Srila Prabhupada’s mission. He often said that the holy name of Krishna is not different from Krishna himself, and that by chanting sincerely one can purify the heart and awaken love for God.

In a world full of distractions, stress and constantly changing circumstances, chanting gives me stability and purpose. Whether chanting the beads silently or out loud in kirtan, the mahamantra – Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare – is a lifeline. It calms the mind, softens the heart, and focuses my attention on what really matters: my relationship with Krishna.

Srila Prabhupada didn’t just preach this instruction—he lived it. Even in his last days, he immersed himself in chanting and encouraged others to chant. He often reminded us that success in the spiritual life is guaranteed if we only chant sincerely, attentively, and regularly.

Of course, following this instruction is not always easy. The mind resists, laziness creeps in, and routine can dull the soul. But I have learned that progress lies not in perfection, but in perseverance. Even on difficult days, chanting reminds me that Krishna is close. He is just a name away.

Following this one instruction ties all the other instructions together—to associate with devotees, to read Srila Prabhupada’s books, to engage in service, to avoid offense, and to live a life of honesty and devotion. This is the golden thread that holds my spiritual life together.

Srila Prabhupada once said, “Just chant Hare Krishna and your life will become excellent.” I believe him. And that is why this is the instruction I follow most closely.
